Hiking Mount Margaret Trail in Red Feather Lakes, CO
The Mount Margaret Trail is a relatively popular trail for the small town of Red Feather Lakes, Colorado. During the winter months snow can be prominent and make this trail a little difficult, but otherwise it’s relatively flat and easy. And the view makes it well worth the hike. The trail starts off behind the trail sign at the entrance of the parking lot. We’ve passed this trail several times and avoided it due to its popularity in the prime summer months, and the tendency for it to be muddy at the trail entrance. Please don’t let this deter you. It lends itself to a nice afternoon walk.
The trail winds through the woods, giving way to small hillsides, open fields, and tiny streams. You’ll pass a gated area about a mile inward. There are several campsites along the way, where hikers and bikers take the opportunity to spend the night and hike more the following day. There are several trails that split from the main trail. One is a loop trail that heads to Dowdy Lake and takes you back up to Mount Margaret. Due to time constraints and the weather conditions (it was January and there was quite a bit of snow on the ground) we chose to head straight to Mount Margaret. As you approach Mount Margaret, you will notice the trail starts a small incline. To reach the very top requires just a little bit of casual rock climbing. From here, you’ll have almost a complete 360 degree view of the surrounding area. Although this trail is approximately 8 miles round trip, it’s a nice hike that is relatively easy. I would highly recommend it to anyone, looking to spend the day enjoying the view.
Difficulty: Easy
Terrain: open gravel road
Length: Approximately 8 miles round trip
