Dakota Ridge Trail - Golden, CO

The Dakota Ridge Trail is a spectacular hike, which provides incredible views of the eastern plains, as well as the foothills and Rocky Mountains to the south and west. The views along this trail are some of the best in the Golden, CO area, due mostly to the fact that it runs along a high hogback and hikers can see these great views in many different directions. One of the other big attractions is the dinosaur tracks, which can be seen along a short stretch of the trail.

In Horsetooth Mountain Park, you can choose many different combinations of trails, depending on what scenery you like, what terrain you are ready for, and the distance that you would like to hike. One great alternative to the Horsetooth Rock Trail is a hike that takes you to the east of Horsetooth Rock. This is a less traveled route, but one with rewarding views of Horsetooth Rock and Horsetooth Reservoir.

Maxwell Natural Area

Maxwell Natural Area is located on the western edge of Ft. Collins, near the Colorado State football stadium (Hughes Stadium). The trail starts at the parking area, which is just off of the Dixon Canyon Road, on the opposite side of the road from the Pine Ridge Natural Area. The trail runs along a field and winds behind the football stadium. It slowly becomes steeper as the trail winds up the side of the ridge. There are often deer, prairie dogs, and other wildlife in sight in this area.
